Tufts of steel-grey clouds roll by
Painted by the wind across the canvas of the sky
Soft as a sigh, a rain shower follows behind
Caught by surprise, children scatter and hide
Umbrellas like mushrooms
open wide
The sleepy town awakens
from this midsummer’s surprise
In furrows along the road
Rivulets chatter as they flow
An old cypress shelters huddled crows
Abashed by the probing rain
Their modesty assailed
Flowers bow their heads in shame
When the shower subsides
The sun weakly tries
To illuminate the mother-of-pearl sky
Children come out to play
To splash in puddles of rain
Frog choruses erupt in joyful praise
The mantis comes to sanction with prayer
The merriment of those gathered there
The fragrance of wet wisteria hangs in the air
Detained by the rain adults hurry by
In motionless wonder stands a child
He sees in a puddle the eternal sky
