Question:
Several students have written us to ask,”What can we do to support the rights of Native Americans and their efforts to prevent the Standing Rock pipeline project? How can we best do it?” There has also been some focus in their questions about the abuse of elders and children in the protests. In some cases your teachings are cited, “to make changes within, in order to create changes without,” but they are asking for help with practical guidance.
Almine’s Answer:
The changes to make are indeed within. Remember: you strengthen what you oppose. Find in your own life where your relationship with others is being used, specifically where it is keeping them from growing and becoming stronger themselves.
Examine where you shelter with kindness, serve without their contributing to their own life with as much effort, where you keep picking them up when they fall, etc. Mend your world by mending your life. If there’s an aspect that is prevalent like abuse of children and elders … stop abusing your Inner Child… play and explore and just allow more lighthearted things into each day. As for the Inner Elder … take time each day to feed the spiritual — at least as much time as you give to feeding the body.

Working closely with the Indigenous community as Liaison for Belvaspata, I understand your concerns and have perhaps a clearer picture of what is happening. There is also an upcoming online webinar about Achieving Oneness on December 8th. The 8th Fire is a prophecy that the 7th Fire is lit when spiritual teachings again come forth and flourish and through them is ignited the 8th Fire of Unity, Harmony, Justice and Brother/Sisterhood. You can only contribute Oneness when you have it, as truly the outer world reflects the inner.
For those concerned I highly recommend Belvaspata for the injured, many of them medics they were trying to unblock the road for emergency vehicles. The woman who may lose her arm because of a concession grenade was helping another person. The medical team at Standing Rock has released a video about there experiences, many who as first responders have worked so closely with law enforcement for many years in shock and trauma.
Children are not on the front lines. Elders have come to the river to pray and they did have Sweat Lodges there but some were arrested during ceremony in their underwear, the Lodge destroyed and their sacred articles taken, some not returned. The front lines are for the young and strong as it should be. They have been facing hostile energies. End the war within that it will end without.
