It means although it was just in the beginning stages, there was something you had a misperception about. Although it’s mostly not there anymore, there are still bits of the misperception lingering.

I just saw a live baby possum walking across my yard at sunset last night. I wondered then, what the symbolism was. It was strange to see it wandering before it was dark out.
