In a communication with Our Beloved Almine, I had the chance to ask her if she would give us a little more information on preparedness. She was happy to oblige.
QUESTION: There are so many possible doomsday scenarios. How must I choose what eventuality to prepare for?
ANSWER: If you live a wise and balanced life, preparedness happens automatically. For instance: at the core of all preparedness lies financial preparedness. We have for many years known that no matter how disciplined we must be, we must earn, live within our means and practice the qualities of gratitude, self-reliance, and generosity. However, above all, save an emergency fund somewhere of your choice (I recommended having a savings slush fund that will cover your monthly living expenses for three months). I have also recommended acquiring a variety of job skills. Even if your savings get depleted during unforeseen circumstances, get right back up and start saving again. Simply gathering spare change from yourself and family members in a glass jar, could yield about $40 every month or two. This could pay for a child’s school lunches, or the family’s entertainment, or cut firewood or a family member’s replacement underwear. Don’t eat non-organic or unhealthy food (just because it’s cheaper), when the going gets rough. That is not the time to forget about health.
