Long have I watched
throughout the years
Man’s games of control
born of fear
I’ve seen him rise through the passage of time
From the grotesque to the refined
Like the ebb and flow of ocean tides
While I remain, generations pass by
I’ve buried loved ones along the way
And watched with joy the children play
Too many losses heartache and pain
How can the love of life be regained?
I collect memories like pearls on a string;
Relive the gladness those moments bring
I remember the dawn’s
rose-petal glow
The flight of geese over the snow
A baby seal’s innocent eyes
A newborn child’s piercing cries
A cloud of dust, wild mustangs thundering by
Across the Mesa under the Texas sky
I deeply drink of life’s heady wine
Immortality is not for the weak of mind
Some fear death but most never fully live
Greedily grasping they forget to give
Resisting loss they deny the gain
Heroic actors on a stage they’ve made
If you wish to leave death behind
To live beyond the ravages of time
Exchange the actor’s mask for authenticity
In the fullness of the moment find eternity
